AHA cancels conference in Baltimore
Due to unrest in Baltimore, the American Heart Association (AHA) canceled its Quality of Care and Outcomes Research (QCOR) Scientific Sessions, which was scheduled for April 29 to May 1 at the Hilton hotel in Baltimore.
On Monday, demonstrators took to the streets of Baltimore to protest the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old who died of spinal cord injuries on April 19 while in police custody. Maryland Gov.Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency in Baltimore, while Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake imposed a curfew in the city.
The AHA’s QCOR conference was held in Baltimore the past two years and was to begin at 12:30 p.m. ET on April 29.
“Your safety and well-being are our highest concerns,” the AHA wrote in a note to attendees on Monday night. “After speaking with local authorities, hotel management and the Convention and Visitors Bureau we have decided to cancel the 2015 QCOR conference due to the potential for violence.”
