Florida medical center begins using minimally invasive heart pump in cardiac surgeries
Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida has begun using minimally invasive heart pumps to help get patients through cardiac surgeries, reports an NPR affiliate in Gainesville, Florida.
Surgeons at the medical center completed their first successful surgery using Abiomed’s Impella heart pump in February. Since then, they have completed four more successful operations.
“This device will give us more opportunities and more room to take care of those more complex patients, and the doctors are more confident here now taking care of patients,” said Prem Singh, MD, Ocala Health’s cardiac catheterization laboratory medical director, who was involved in two of the five Impella procedures.
