Nationwide web system helps physicians flag duplicate prescriptions
A clinical decision support (CDS) system in Taiwan resulted in the cancellation of 42 percent of duplicate orders for medications inputted by physicians, researchers reported in JMIR Medical Informatics.
Using the PharmaCloud web-based query system and medication repository system implemented across Taiwan, principal investigator Chien-Tsia Liu, PhD, and colleagues analyzed its ability to reduce duplicate orders and potential adverse drug reactions.
Among more than 30,000 prescriptions ordered in the computerized system, 5.83 percent were flagged as potentially duplicate orders. Physician responses indicated 42.06 percent of those alerts led to medication cancellations.
