Report: Non-clinical factors most important in patients’ physician ratings
Non-clinical factors such as communication, personality and interactions with staff may be the keys to a high physician rating, according to a report that included almost seven million patient reviews and comments.
The study, conducted by Healthgrades and the Medical Group Management Association, revealed 69 percent of all physician reviews mentioned at least one of the following: compassion, comfort, patience, personality, staff, bedside manner, knowledge, time, insurance, appointments or communication.
In addition, 80 percent of consumers prefer physicians who offer online appointments, even if there are fewer available timeslots, and patients who leave ratings are generally very satisfied or not at all. Seventy percent of patients left five-star reviews and 22 percent left one-star reviews; two-, three- and four-star reviews made up less than 10 percent of all reviews combined.
