Radiation protection in the cath lab | Imaging catheters removed from market over safety risks | CT-guided PCI

Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions President James Hermiller, Jr., MD, explains SCAI's push for wider adoption of new, innovative cath lab radiation protection technology to reduce radiation exposure and the need for lead aprons.

The devices are being recalled and discontinued after the FDA shared a series of concerns. This is a Class I recall, meaning using this system could result in serious injuries or death.

A catheter sheath detached during use and was left in the patient’s body. It was successfully removed, but the FDA said it is now evaluating the potential risk to others going forward. There is no official recall at this time.

The new technology from LUMA Vision allows operators to deliver 2D and 4D ultrasound images in real time. The advanced catheter was built with maneuverability and increased visibility in mind.

The study's lead author emphasized that stenting during CTO PCI procedures "should be considered safe and effective in the long term."
