CT perfusion imaging predicts adverse events for patients with CAD

A quantification of myocardial blood flow using CT perfusion (CTP) imaging was strongly predictive of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and offered additional prognostic ability when added to coronary CT angiography, researchers reported in JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging.

Researchers: More evidence needed for TAVR in young patients

A Medtronic Evolut Corevalve TAVR valve in use at Emory.

Researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine in New York are worried the extension of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) to younger, intermediate-risk patients is outpacing clinical evidence.

Omega-3 fatty acids have minimum impact on cardiovascular health

Fish oil pills are prescribed to patients to help reduce cardiovascular risks from atherosclerosis.

A recent review of almost 80 randomized control trials suggests increased intake of long-chain omega-3 (LCn3) polyunsaturated fatty acids from oily fish have minimal to no effect on mortality or cardiovascular health. Results of the review were published online July 18 in the Cochrane Library.

Study calls for earlier intervention on mitral valves

Mitral valve operations are the fastest-growing type of heart procedure, according to an analysis of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ Adult Cardiac Surgery database—but researchers believe interventions at earlier stages could further improve outcomes.

E-counseling lowers blood pressure, CVD risk

The implementation of e-counseling, in addition to traditional medical therapy, improved systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction in the REACH (Reducing Risk with E-based support for Adherence to Lifestyle Change in Hypertension) trial.

Discharge against medical advice post PCI is ‘infrequent but deadly’

HF-related mortality among older adults improved from 1999 to 2012, but then decreased considerably over the next several years. Researchers explored the latest data at length, sharing their findings in JACC: Heart Failure.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) patients who discharge against medical advice (DAMA) are twice as likely to be readmitted to the hospital, according to a new study published in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions.

IVC filters improve in-hospital mortality rates for patients with congestive heart failure, pulmonary embolism

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement is associated with improved in-hospital mortality rates for patients admitted with congestive heart failure (CHF) and pulmonary embolism (PE), according to a new study published by the American Journal of Roentgenology.
