Medtronic gains CE mark for next-gen portfolio of conduction system pacemakers

Medtronic has secured CE mark approval for its Vitalis portfolio of next-generation heart devices built for conduction system pacing (CSP). This includes the company’s ReSyncra CSP, Restoria CSP, Refina CSP, Effectra, and Confirma pacemakers.

CSP uses the heart’s electrical pathways to regulate heart rate and heartbeat coordination. According to Medtronic, this is a more physiologic pacing option for patients than clinicians have had access to in the past.

“Our new pacemakers build on Medtronic's long history of leadership in cardiac electrophysiology therapies,” Robert C. Kowal, MD, PhD, general manager of Medtronic’s cardiac pacing therapies business, said in a statement. “From patients requiring traditional pacing support to those who may benefit from CSP or cardiac resynchronization therapy, this portfolio was designed to personalize therapy, simplify physician workflows, and support patients throughout their healthcare journey.”

These devices all feature Medtronic’s new RadiaSure technology, which helps patients more safely tolerate the radiation doses associated with most cancer treatments. In addition, the Allometric Pacing feature helps patients specify personalized pacing rates based on their height and ejection fraction.

According to Medtronic, the most advanced offering in its Vitalis portfolio is the ReSyncra CSP pacemaker. It was developed specifically for patients who may benefit from cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), but are typically unable to undergo effective CRT.
