Heart Failure Society of America names its newest leaders and board members
The Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) has announced its new officers and board members. Their terms start at the conclusion of the HFSA Annual Scientific Meeting 2025, scheduled for Sept. 26-29, 2025, in Minneapolis.
• Michael Givertz, MD, medical director of heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a professor at Harvard Medical School, was selected to serve as president-elect for 2025-2026. He will serve as president in 2026-2027, and past president in 2027-2028.
• Kenneth Margulies, MD, research director for heart failure/transplantation, director of the cardiology clinical research unit and a professor of cardiovascular medicine and physiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, will become the 2025-2026 president after the HFSA annual meeting in September, with current President Michael Felker, MD, becoming immediate past president.
• Nancy Sweitzer, MD, PhD, vice chair of clinical research for the department of medicine, director of clinical research for the division of cardiology and director of translational workforce development at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, will serve as treasurer from 2025-2027.
• Kavita Sharma, MD, director of heart failure and cardiac transplantation, director of the heart failure with preserved ejection fraction program and associate professor of medicine for The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, was selected as a new member of the HFSA Board of Directors.
• Anekwe Onwuanyi, MD, professor of medicine and chief of cardiology with Morehouse School of Medicine, was selected to serve an additional term as a member of the HFSA Board of Directors.
• Mitchell Psotka, MD, PhD, section chief of heart failure and transplant with the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, was selected to serve an additional term as a member of the HFSA Board of Directors.
The HFSA provides a platform to improve and expand heart failure care through collaboration, education, innovation, research and advocacy. HFSA members include physicians, scientists, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, trainees, other healthcare workers and patients.
A new journal from HFSA
Felker, the current HFSA president, shares monthly updates on the organization's website. His June update, for example, examined the start of a new industry journal, JCF-Intersections.
"It has been said that some of the most powerful innovations emerge at the intersections of life—where different ideas, perspectives, disciplines, and cultures converge to empower creative minds and drive remarkable breakthroughs," he said. "This journal serves as a platform for discussion, connection, and education—one that proudly promotes disruptive ideas, intellectual exploration and even entertainment."
