Hospital in Mexico earns first heart failure certification of its kind

The American Heart Association (AHA) has recognized the National Institute of Cardiology Ignacio Chávez in Mexico City, Mexico, with its Comprehensive Heart Failure Center Certification. This represents the first time a facility outside of the United States has received this honor.

The National Institute of Cardiology Ignacio Chávez was evaluated by a team of specialists focused on quality, safety and value. The facility was found to comply with the AHA’s Comprehensive Heart Failure Center standards and it offers advanced imaging options, participates in clinical trials and employs physicians and other healthcare personnel who are specifically trained to care for heart failure patients.

“We are honored to be the first organization outside the U.S. to meet the AHA’s heart failure certification criteria,” Alexandra Arias, MD, head of the coronary care unit and emergency department at Ignacio Chávez and vice president of the Mexican Society of Cardiology, said in a statement. “This certification validates the dedication of our clinicians and staff to advancing heart failure care for our patients and communities.”

“This milestone reflects a shared commitment to high-quality care for heart failure patients worldwide,” added DP Suresh, MD, volunteer co-chair of the AHA’s International Committee and executive medical director of the Florence Wormald Heart and Vascular Institute at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Cincinnati. “By meeting the rigorous standards for Comprehensive Heart Failure Center Certification, Instituto Nacional de Cardiología Ignacio Chávez is helping set the global bar for evidence-based, patient-centered care to optimize heart failure treatment and reduce readmissions”

According to the AHA, approximately 750,000 people in Mexico are living with heart failure. This rate is on the rise as the country’s population ages.
