Thomson Reuters' Top 50 cardiac hospitals deliver safe, cost-effective care

The Thomson Reuters top 50 U.S. hospitals for inpatient cardiovascular services have fewer deaths, shorter lengths of stay and lower costs per case, according to the firm's latest ranking.

Thomson Reuters evaluated 1,022 hospitals by analyzing outcomes for heart failure (HF) and MI patients, in addition to patients who underwent CABG and PCI procedures at specialty, short-term, acute care and non-federal U.S. hospitals.

Thomson Reuters said that all hospitals have improved care in the last several years, reaching benchmarks of 96 percent patient survival and 93 percent of patients remaining complication-free. The top 50 hospitals surpassed even these high standards.

“These hospitals have raised the bar significantly," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals program at Thomson Reuters. "They deliver higher survival rates, shorter hospital stays, fewer readmissions and lower costs, which adds up to enormous value for the communities they serve."

In addition, the winners had 33 percent fewer deaths than non-winning hospitals for bypass surgery and had fewer patients who were readmitted within 30 days of discharge. The top ranked hospitals also had shorter length of stays and lower costs—$1,300 less per case.

The company used 2008 and 2009 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services hospital compare data to score hospitals in key performance areas including: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures, percentage of bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, length of stay and hospital costs.
