Louisiana cardiologist trains others on specialized vein procedure
Heart doctors from all over the country are traveling to the Vein Center of Southwest Louisiana to learn how to perform a specialized vein procedure from staff cardiologist Carl Fastabend, MD, reports an NBC affiliate in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
He has performed more than 500 intravascular ultrasound procedures, which brings relief to patients suffering from chronic pain. The procedure includes using a specially-designed catheter with an ultrasound probe that lets the doctor visualize pelvic veins.
"These are patients that have swollen legs, pain in their legs with walking, skin changes with skin thickening and cellulitis, even progressing sometimes to the point of skin ulceration," Fastabend said.
