Top US heart hospital launches new AI research lab
Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital, part of The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, has launched a new research lab focused on the development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in interventional cardiology.
The new Samuel Fineman Cardiac Catheterization Artificial Intelligence Research Lab is dedicated to exploring AI’s potential to transform every aspect of patient care, from risk stratification to outcome optimization and beyond.
Annapoorna Kini, MD, director of The Mount Sinai Hospital’s cardiac cath lab, will serve as the new research lab’s director.
“While AI is not a magic solution to every problem, there are many places it can make a notable improvement over traditional techniques or bring some approaches that were never possible within reach,” Kini said in a statement. “In five or so years, we think that many workflows can be augmented by AI to better focus our resources where they are most needed.”
Kini emphasized that the hospital currently uses AI in a variety of ways to drive patient engagement and help clinicians coordinate care on a day-to-day basis. Now, she explained, the goal is to expand the use of these advanced algorithms.”
“In our cath lab at Mount Sinai, we have always been at the forefront of using rapidly evolving AI technologies to advance patient care,” she said. “We have already implemented AI applications to augment patient engagement and care coordination, and we are now moving to the next level by integrating AI technologies in our research and clinical work. As an early adopter in adapting to a future with AI, we plan to continue to be a leader in embedding AI in our processes and work flows to achieve even better outcomes for our patients.”
Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital, named after world-renowned cardiologist Valentin Fuster, MD, is regularly listed as one of the top hospitals for cardiology and cardiac surgery in the United States. In a recent ranking from U.S. News & World Report., for example, it came in at No. 2 for the entire country.
