FDA announces supplement recall over risk of heart attack or stroke
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that 123Herbals is recalling all lots of its Silintan capsules due to significant cardiovascular risks.
Silintan is a dietary supplement marketed as a treatment for joint and body aches. An analysis by the FDA, however, found that these capsules were tainted with meloxicam, an approved nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
Products containing meloxicam are not legally allowed to be marketed as dietary supplements due to the significant risks associated with taking too much. The FDA’s advisory warns that exceeding the recommended maximum daily dose of meloxicam is associated with an increased risk of “serious life-threatening events” such as blood clots, heart attacks and strokes.
Patients taking high levels of meloxicam also face risks of experiencing “hypersensitivity reactions, gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration and perforation.” In addition, there is an increased risk of acute kidney injury.
The FDA advisory also emphasized that individuals already taking blood thinners or other NSAIDs could face a significantly greater risk of a bleeding event if they consumed too much meloxicam.
FDA’s warning to 123Herbals
The FDA sent 123Herbals a warning letter about this issue—as well as other concerns—in November 2025. That letter is available on the FDA’s website.
“Your ‘Silintan’ product is not the first product found by FDA to contain hidden ingredients,” according to the agency’s letter. “You previously sold the product ‘Vail-Bon Jie Yang Wan,’ which FDA laboratory testing identified as containing undeclared dexamethasone and chlorpheniramine. In addition, you market other products on your website that are intended for pain relief, similar to ‘Silintan.’ While the agency has not sampled and tested these products from your inventory to date, this letter is to emphasize that it is your legal responsibility under federal law to ensure that products you sell do not contain any undeclared or potentially harmful ingredients, and that they are marketed in compliance with applicable laws.”
