Dr. Ted Bass inducted as SCAI 2013-14 president

Today Ted A. Bass, M.D., FSCAI, announced that the focus of his term as the 36th President of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions will be to expand SCAI’s commitment to quality improvement in invasive and interventional cardiology. Dr. Bass was inducted at the SCAI 2013 Scientific Sessions, where he led a Town Hall-style discussion among attendees about the opportunities and challenges facing the specialty. 

HRS: 7% of S-ICD patients inappropriately shocked

Seven percent of patients implanted with subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (S-ICDs) experienced inappropriate shocks, according to an analysis of registry data presented May 9 at the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) scientific sessions in Denver.

SCAI: Post-stenting angioplasty reduces restenosis risk

A CREST substudy found that performing balloon angioplasty after carotid artery stenting reduced the risk of restenosis by 64 percent but increased the risk of stroke. The stroke finding was not statistically significant, though. Results were presented May 9 at the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) scientific sessions in Orlando, Fla.

HRS: Watchman bumps out warfarin in PROTECT AF

The Watchman wait may be over. An analysis of long-term data found the Watchman left atrial appendage closure device to be superior to warfarin for primary efficacy and mortality.

SCAI: Model projects renal denervation’s benefits at 10 years

Renal denervation received a theoretical thumbs up at the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) scientific sessions in Orlando, Fla., May 9, based on a model that predicts reduction in cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients treated with the ablation therapy. The projections need to be validated in clinical trials, the poster presenter cautioned.

HRS: Registry data point to shortfall in anticoagulant therapy

Patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) were less likely to receive guideline recommended anticoagulation therapy compared with persistent AF patients. The analysis presented May 8 at the Heart Rhythm Society scientific sessions in Denver included registry data on more than 62,000 patients.

Conference conundrum

This week three different societies held or are holding cardiovascular scientific sessions packed with clinical presentations and programs that address everything from policy to payment structures. Choosing which talks within any given conference to attend—or miss—is a conundrum.
