Orlando, FL (May 10, 2013) – Today Ted A. Bass, M.D., FSCAI, announced that the focus of his term as the 36th President of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions will be to expand SCAI’s commitment to quality improvement in invasive and interventional cardiology. Dr. Bass was inducted at the SCAI 2013 Scientific Sessions, where he led a Town Hall-style discussion among attendees about the opportunities and challenges facing the specialty.
Dr. Bass voiced enthusiastic support for SCAI’s programs that provide quality improvement tools for interventional cardiologists and cath lab teams as well as potential initiatives to encourage all interventional cardiologists to make a personal commitment to quality.
“I became a Fellow of SCAI in 1991 because I believed in its mission of improving the health of heart disease patients through a higher standard of quality care,” said Dr. Bass. “As president, I look forward to continuing the momentum SCAI has already built around quality care in interventional cardiology and taking it one step further by working with each member to ensure a personal commitment to safe, quality cardiovascular care. SCAI’s focus has been on improving quality one cath lab at a time. Now we will expand to improving quality one interventional cardiologist at a time.”
Dr. Bass has contributed to SCAI’s growth and positive impact on the profession in many ways. He oversaw the successful Cardiovascular Regional Education Symposia and Training programs, is a past-chair of the SCAI Scientific Sessions Program Committee and most recently finished a three-year term as chair of SCAI’s International Programs and Membership Committee, where he made a significant impact on positioning SCAI as a global partner in interventional cardiovascular care.
Board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology, Dr. Bass serves in a variety of roles at the University of Florida-Shands Jacksonville, including professor and chief of the cardiology division, medical director of the cardiovascular center and program director of the interventional cardiology fellowship. He was rated as a US News & World Report Top Doctor for 2012-13.
Dr. Bass earned his medical degree from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, RI. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, MN, and his fellowship in cardiovascular disease from Boston University Medical Center. In 2011 Dr. Bass was appointed to a four-year-term as chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Interventional Cardiology Test Committee, which oversees the development of policies, standards and requirements for certification in interventional cardiology.
