Authorities raid cardiologists’ homes as part of fraud investigation
Authorities have raided the homes of multiple cardiologists accused of taking bribes from medtech companies. The clinicians all practice in the Netherlands. While some of them work out of OLVH hospital in Amsterdam, others work out of CWZ hospital in Nijmegen. No arrests have been made at this time.
According to reports from NL Times and Dutch News, the raids are part of an ongoing investigation by The Fiscal Information and Investigation Service, a Dutch government agency that looks into tax crimes and other types of fraud. The agency received multiple tips that these cardiologists received cash payments from various companies in exchange for using their devices to treat patients. All of the cardiologists accused of participating in these scheme are said to be experienced with long, respected careers. At least two of them have taken part in large clinical trials.
“Patients must be able to trust that a medical specialist makes the right decision for their health and is not influenced by rewards from the medical industry,” a spokesperson from the Fiscal Information and Investigation Service told the media.
Both hospitals impacted by this ongoing investigation have confirmed that they know about it. At least one facility, CWZ hospital, has said it is no longer working with the cardiologists being investigated.
