Vascular surgeon indicted for murder of ex-wife and her husband
Michael McKee, a vascular surgeon with OSF Saint Anthony in Rockford, Illinois, has been charged with the murder of his ex-wife and her husband. The homicides occurred on Dec. 30 in Ohio.
McKee is accused of making the journey from Illinois to Ohio and shooting the two victims—Monique Tepe and Spencer Tepe—in their family’s home. The couple’s children were not physically harmed.
According to court records out of Franklin County, Ohio, McKee was indicted on four counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary on Jan. 16. McKee plans on pleading not guilty to these charges, his legal team has said.
Video footage showing a “person of interest” was released by authorities in the aftermath of the murders. The Columbus Police Department later opened up a portal for anonymous tips. McKee was eventually identified as the case’s primary suspect and brought into custody.
McKee was married to Monique Tepe from 2015 to 2017. She married Spencer Tepe in 2020. A family member spoke to NBC News about McKee’s relationship with Monique, emphasizing that he was known to be emotionally abusive.
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant detailed the case during a press conference after McKee was arrested.
“We believe at this point we have the person responsible for the murders of Monique and Spencer Tepe in custody, and that person is Michael McKee,” Bryant said. “This is still an active and ongoing investigation. Detectives are still going through evidence, tips and videos.”
Bryant said many details can still not be shared with the public, but she did describe the incident as a “targeted attack” related to domestic violence.
“We can say that we have the suspect’s vehicle on neighborhood video surveillance arriving just before the murders and leaving shortly after,” Bryant added. “Detectives were able to link this vehicle to McKee. The vehicle was located in Rockford, Illinois, and evidence was found that showed McKee in possession of the vehicle before and after the homicides. We can also say that multiple weapons were taken from the property of McKee.”
OSF Saint Anthony did confirm in a statement to the media it has been cooperating with the authorities. The hospital said law enforcement officials could answer any other questions.
