RSNA seeking new editor for cardiothoracic imaging journal

The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) is seeking a cardiac imager to take over as the new editor of its journal Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging. Launched in 2019, the peer-reviewed bi-monthly journal focuses on advances in cardiac, vascular and thoracic medical imaging. It includes research on CT, MRI, artificial intelligence, congenital heart disease and pulmonary conditions

The journal's founding editor, Suhny Abbara, MD, took over as the editor-in-chief for RSNA’s flagship journal, Radiology. Harold Litt, MD, PhD, is serving as interim editor of Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging. He has previously served as the journal's deputy editor for cardiac MRI.

In its posting for editor applicants, RSNA said the responsibilities include encouraging submissions of scientific manuscripts, setting high standards of scientific integrity, developing peer review guidelines, ensuring timely release of accepted manuscripts for publication and working with RSNA leadership to produce a high-quality, self-supporting publication with a strong impact factor. The position pays $75,000 annually and is open to graduate degree (MD or PhD) applicants with expertise in radiology who have general familiarity with cardiac, vascular and thoracic medical imaging.

Ideally, RSNA said it wants an editor who has a significant record of authorship of scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Preference will be given to candidates who have previously served as editor or deputy editor for one or more journals in the field of radiology or medical imaging.

Interested imagers can submit their curriculum vitae and a letter of interest to Career Center | Recruitment. This link also includes additional information about the editor role and responsibilities. RSNA said the letter of interest should outline qualifications and highlight relevant experience.

The deadline to apply is the close of business on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026.

Cardiac imager takes over as head of RSNA Journals

Abbara, senior associate consultant and chair of the cardiothoracic imaging division at Mayo Clinic's Jacksonville, Florida, campus, was selected by the RSNA Board of Directors as the new Radiology editor in October, and began that role in January 2026. He is a former president of the Society of Cardiovascular CT (SCCT) and a noted researcher in cardiovascular imaging. In addition to Radiology, he also will oversee the publication of RSNA’s suite of six publications, which includes RadioGraphics, Radiology: Artificial Intelligence, Radiology: Imaging Cancer and Radiology Advances.

Abbara replaced Linda Moy, MD, who resigned Aug. 31 to focus on her new role as vice chair of AI for the New York University department of radiology. She began the role in January 2023, and was the first female editor of Radiology since the journal started in 1923.

“I am deeply honored to be named editor of Radiology, a journal that has long set the standard for excellence in our field,” Abbara said in a statement when named to the position in October 2025. “Together with our editorial team and contributors, I look forward to advancing the science and impact of radiology for the benefit of our patients and the global medical community. We will embrace emerging technologies, support rigorous science and clinical trials, and incorporate a broad range of perspectives and global viewpoints, all while remaining grounded in the core values of scientific excellence and patient-centered care.”

Abbara has been heavily involved with RSNA for years. He has actively served a number of other professional societies, including the American Heart Association (AHA), American College of Radiology (ACR), the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), SCCT, North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging (NASCI), the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE).
