Johnson & Johnson to acquire Atraverse Medical

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to acquire Atraverse Medical, a San Diego-based medtech startup. Financial terms of the deal have not been announced.

Atraverse is known in the field of electrophysiology for its left-heart access and radiofrequency (RF) technologies. The company received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its Hotwire Transseptal Access System in 2025 and the Hotwire radiofrequency (RF) guidewire in 2024. In addition, Atraverse raised $29 million in 2025 and another $12.5 million in 2024.

According to Johnson & Johnson, this acquisition is expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2026.

Atraverse no stranger to electrophysiology landscape

Atraverse was founded in 2022 by Steven Mickelsen, MD, John Slump and Eric Sauter, the same group that founded Farapulse in 2012. Farapulse was later acquired by Boston Scientific for an upfront payment of $295 million. The Farapulse technology is now one of Boston Scientific’s trademark offerings after receiving FDA approval in January 2024.

Mickelsen, a veteran electrophysiologist, also founded another medtech company, Field Medical, in 2022.
