Siemens Healthineers doubles down on cardiovascular care as it exits general imaging ultrasound business

Siemens Healthineers has officially ceased all sales of its general imaging ultrasound systems. The healthcare giant announced the shift in strategy on Monday, Oct. 12, saying it will now increase its focus on procedural imaging and image-guided therapies. The goal is to build on its strength in cardiovascular imaging, specifically in the areas of intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) and AI, and help care teams perform more complex procedures than ever as technologies continue to evolve.

Going forward, Siemens Healthineers remains focused on technologies used by electrophysiologists and interventional cardiologists for the detection and management of cardiovascular disease. The company’s Acuson Origin, for example, is a cardiovascular ultrasound system with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities that first gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance in 2024. The Acuson P500 and Acuson Freestyle systems are also still part of the Siemens Healthineers portfolio.

On the other hand, the company will no longer be selling its Acuson Sequoia, Acuson Redwood, Acuson Juniper or Acuson Maple systems.

Siemens Healthineers has gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for Acuson Origin, its new cardiovascular ultrasound system featuring advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The Acuson Origin represents a significant update from the prior Siemens Healthineers cardiovascular ultrasound system, the Acuson SC2000.

“Medicine is evolving, and imaging is increasingly becoming part of therapy, not just diagnosis,” Sourabh Pagaria, head of ultrasound for Siemens Healthineers, said in a prepared statement. “By concentrating our ultrasound portfolio on procedural imaging, we can apply our strengths in advanced cardiovascular imaging, ICE, software, AI, and partnerships with cardiovascular device companies to address important clinical needs and create long-term value for physicians, patients, and Siemens Healthineers.”

Siemens Healthineers will still support all existing customers with their general imaging ultrasound systems. Maintenance, software updates and all other types of customer service will be provided for the full life cycle of each product.
