American College of Cardiology names renowned cardiologist the next editor-in-chief of its flagship journal
The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has announced that Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, a veteran cardiologist known for his groundbreaking research abilities, will be the new editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).
“The opportunities ahead for JACC to be a force of good for our patients, our profession and society are enormous,” Krumholz said in a statement announcing the news. “JACC has the potential to shape the future of cardiology. I am eager to engage with our community worldwide to build on its past successes and find new ways to contribute to achieving ever better patient outcomes and more equitable, effective, efficient and evidence-based clinical care.”
Krumholz is a professor of medicine at the Yale School of Medicine and director of the Yale New Haven Hospital Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. In addition to co-authoring more than 1,500 papers and being one of the most cited medical researchers in the world, he was the founding editor of both Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes and CardioExchange.
Krumholz also co-founded medRxiv, a nonprofit preprint server for health research, and the healthcare technology companies HugoHealth and Refractor Health.
“I will emphasize inclusion, impact and inspiration, positioning the journal to provide evidence and wisdom to guide us through a rapidly evolving landscape of cardiology, as we seek to maximize the possibilities for great advances and mitigate, and even avoid, the potential for harm,” Krumholz added in the same statement.
Krumholz is expected to start transitioning into the role in January 2024, and he officially kicks off his five-year term in July 2024. He certainly has big shoes to fill, as the publication’s current editor-in-chief is Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, one of the world’s most prominent cardiologists.
“Harlan’s creativity will allow JACC to positively evolve with these rapidly changing times,” Fuster said.
JACC is the ACC’s premier publication. The JACC family of journals also includes JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, JACC: Heart Failure, JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology, JACC: Basic to Translational Science, JACC: Case Reports, JACC: CardioOncology, JACC: Asia and JACC: Advances.
