Man who killed family in murder-suicide was a former American Heart Association employee
The Michigan man at the center of an ongoing murder-suicide investigation spent nearly three years working for the American Heart Association (AHA).
Authorities believe Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, shot and killed his wife and six children before intentionally setting the family house on fire and taking his own life. The family was found inside the home on Friday, July 24. His wife, Amanda Karolkiewicz, was 39 years old. The six children ranged in age from 5 to 15 years old.
The AHA has confirmed Karolkiewicz was an employee of the organization from September 2023 until just a few weeks ago. During his time there, he served as a national vice president of sales and marketing. CPR and first aid training were among the topics he focused on in this role.
“As an organization with professional staff who are dedicated to helping others, we are devastated by the news out of Grand Haven, and our thoughts are with the loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragedy,” the AHA said in a statement to the media.
It is not clear at this time why Karolkiewicz stopped working with the organization in early July.
Authorities seeking answers
Captain Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office spoke about his team’s ongoing investigation at a press conference on July 27.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand,” he said. “But we’ll do our best to find the answers and honor the memory of those victims.”
Sparks noted that there was no known history of incidences at the family’s residence. He also emphasized that this is still an open investigation.
