Renal Denervation

Renal denervation (RDN) is a minimally invasive procedure performed by interventional cardiologists that treats uncontrolled hypertension by targeting overactive renal artery nerves with ablation. In 2025, CMS announced it was covering RDN in patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Decisions on whether or not to cover these procedures were previously made on a case-by-case basis.

Recor Medical's Paradise Ultrasound RDN system and Medtronic’s Symplicity Spyral RDN system both secured FDA approval in 2023. The early success of these devices resulted in the creation of new Category 1 CPT codes associated with improved reimbursement.
