Cardiologist impaled by tree branch makes a full recovery
A Pennsylvania cardiologist has made a full recovery after being impaled by a tree branch while skiing back in March.
Roger Kerzner, MD, was on a skip trip in Montana with friends when the incident occurred. Due to snow on the ground, the tree branch in question was hidden from sight when Kerzner fell; he didn’t even realize at first that anything had happened. He was then flown to Billings Clinic, where a team of surgeons was waiting to take care of the wound.
Gordon M. Riha, MD, a surgeon with Billings Clinic, was one of the specialists waiting to help. He told MTN News that ski accidents are something he sees regularly—what stood out about Kerzner’s case was the cardiologist’s attitude.
“I was actually very surprised when he arrived that he was laughing and joking with us,” Riha said, as quoted by MTN News.
Kerzner was discharged after less than a week. And it didn’t take long at all for him to get back to his normal day-to-day life.
“Within two months, I was fully recovered, exercising just as aggressively as I ever had before,” he said, as quoted by MTN News.
